About half a year from the start of 2020 to today. Did you know that a mysterious space created by a certain person is born and disappears, mainly in the area within a 10-minute walk from OMOTESANDO HILLS?

The name of the space and activity is "SKWAT". In 2009, when I was 24 years old and established a free space "VACANT" in Uraharajuku with friends of the same generation, I suddenly became a prominent figure in the culture world...Currently as a representative of the design office DAIKEI MILLS in this town, This is a project by Keisuke Nakamura, who is active worldwide.

What is he trying to do in this city through the activity "SKWAT"? I had an interview.

2009年、20代前半の仲間たちと共に裏原宿のフリースペース「VACANT」を設立。前衛的アーティスト集団・Chim↑Pomを招いたオープニングイベントを皮切りに、この"空っぽ"の箱で様々な化学反応を起こし続けた。2011年に立ち上げた設計事務所・DAIKEI MILLSでは世界に活動の幅を広げながら、CIBONE、6(ROKU)、avex、Artek Tokyo Storeなど、この街でも様々な空間を設計。そして2020年、原宿や青山の空きスペースを"占拠"し、カルチャー・アートの発信拠点とする新たな活動「SKWAT」を開始

---- 原宿や青山の空きスペースを"占拠"するプロジェクト「SKWAT」を2020年にスタートしました。一体どんな活動？

Nakamura :「SKWAT」の語源は「SQUAT（=占拠）」。テナントの入れ替わり期間などに発生する遊休物件を"占拠"し、ポップアップ的にカルチャーの発信拠点をつくりだす活動です。アイデアの元はイギリスやドイツで70年代から存在する、放棄された土地や建物（通常は住居）を占拠する行為「SQUAT」ですが、それを現代の日本で可能な形にアップデートして落とし込んでいます。

---- 今もどこかを"占拠"中？

Nakamura :現在は南青山・みゆき通り沿いの商業施設「ザ ジュエルズ オブ アオヤマ」の一角を占拠中です。高級ブランドが密集するエリアで200平米の面積を使い、建築や写真、ファッションなど、幅広い分野から1000タイトル以上のアートブックを揃えた"地域の図書館"のような場をつくっています。大都会の喧噪から一瞬離れ、ゆったりと流れる時間の中、文化的な刺激に浸っていただけたら嬉しいです。

---- Why did you decide to start "SKWAT" in this town?

Nakamura :In this area near the national stadium, the number of idle properties will increase after the Olympics... In a negative expression, we predicted that there would be a problem with unoccupied houses. In that case, I was wondering if I could make use of the empty space to do something creative and culturally unique to this city. DAIKEI MILLS, the design office that I represent, specializes in spatial design that fully reads the context of the venue so that the potential of the property can be maximized. It is possible to make an instant approach and leave immediately when the time comes. I would like to utilize such skills to create new possibilities in this city that is deeply involved.

The jewelry brand "Hirotaka" flagship store in OMOTESANDO HILLS is also designed by DAIKEI MILLS. It is designed with a simple feel of vitality because it uses brass that is beautiful over time.

----However, at the same time as the start of the activity, a declaration of emergency was issued. What is the impact?

Nakamura :もちろんパンデミックや五輪の延期は予想外でした。しかし、結果的にはその影響で遊休物件はすでに増え始める状態となっているので、やるべきことは変わりません。発生してしまった空きスペースを僕らが"SKWAT"することで、共通の価値観を持った人が繋がり、何かが生まれる空間にする。もちろんCOVID-19とは今後もしばらく付き合っていく世の中な訳ですから、その新たな生活スタイルにもフィットした新たなアプローチは意識しています。そうやって場の価値を改めて高めることが、街にとってはもちろん、物件を持つオーナーさんにとっても必ず良い働きになると信じています。

In the space we arrived at, we were able to enjoy drinks and food from popular cafes while being surrounded by the interiors sold at CIBONE Aoyama.

----In addition, the "online SKWAT" plan is currently underway in response to the social online shift by COVID-19.

Nakamura :It is an attempt to "virtually occupy" the actual idle land found on Google MAP in the online world. A virtual building is created on a real idle land, and the interior space that we think ideally is drawn in it. All items depicted on the table, sofa, lighting, art, fashion items, plants, etc. are made up of products that exist in reality, and you can click on the item to purchase it. EC function. Since COVID-19, various virtual possibilities have been taken up, but by virtually occupying the city that actually exists, it melts the boundary between online and offline, and "shopped in this city". I would like to produce that value.

---- So what is the value of the Omotesando area for Mr. Nakamura?

Nakamura :It is a place where you can change your values and create new definitions.

---- Lastly, what kind of space would be created if SKWAT was done at one corner of OMOTESANDO HILLS?

Nakamura :表参道ヒルズは、表参道のゆるやかな坂道に合わせ施設内の床もスロープ状で構築されているように、屋外と屋内の境界をぼかし施設内自体も街の延長であるかのような設計になっていますね。また、渋谷区立神宮前小学校も隣接しています。そんな背景を踏まえて、「商」と「住」というこれまでの施設キーワードに「学」を足す。来訪者にとっての学びの場であり、同時にそこが街の中の憩いの場となり得るような公共性の高い一角をつくり、表参道ヒルズがより街に溶け込み、来訪者との距離をより縮ませるのはいかがでしょうか。私たちは、どこを"占拠"するにせよ、心の通った温かな取り組みこそが、今のこの悲痛な状況や人々の心理状況に作用し、街のエネルギーとなってくれると信じています。
